Penicillin V potassium is a penicillin antibiotic. The antibacterial spectrum is the same as penicillin. It has antibacterial activity against most gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, some Gram-negative bacteria (e.g. Haemophilus), spirochaetes and actinomyces, but most staphylococcus strains (>90%), including Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase negative staphylococcus, produce beta lactamase to hydrolyze and inactivate the product. The activity of this product against most sensitive strains is 2 ~ 5 times less than that of penicillin. It has no antibacterial effect on penicillase producing strains.
